Eddies Grill - Pizza

14 weeks until Geneva On The Lake awakens from its winter slumber and the shops open for business. Always our first order of business is to eat at Eddie's Grill on the strip. Eddie’s Grill is a favorite summer spot famous for it’s burgers, hot dogs, and fries all served in an old fashioned sock hop diner atmosphere. Eddie’s also serves a great pizza just like the one pictured.

We placed our order and received a call number and was told it would be about 10 minutes. The timing was just about perfect and we took the pizza and found ourselves a booth inside Eddie’s.

The large plain cheese pizza cost $10.00 and was very well cooked. The crust was crunchy, the cheese melted but not burned, and the sauce zesty. Each slice was cut all the way through for easy separation of each slice. And it tasted great.

The Grassy Knoll Institute awards 4.5 shots out of 5 and recommends Eddie’s Grill pizza for dinner.

Hungry Howies Thin Crust Pizza

Hungry Howie's Pizza Shop - Boardman, Ohio
When deciding on a pizza for dinner, several factors come into play.

One: First and foremost, the pizza must be good tasting.
Two: The pizza Ohio has to have a very quick take out service.
Three: The pizza box must be sturdy to survive the ride home.
Four: The pizza must be affordable.
Five: The pizza shop must be close by.

Hungry Howie's meet these requirements. The thin crust is good tasting, not fantastic or exceptional, but good. The drive through pick up is pretty spot on. You pull up, they take your money and hand over the pizza. The box, yellow in color, is sturdy to handle rough roads and perhaps another box stacked on top and still the cheese will not be sticking to the top of the box. Howie's is fairly cheap, and check on their weekly specials for some good deals. And the shop is only five minutes away from us.

BTW, the chicken nuggets, or strips, or tenders, whatever they call them, are not bad.

The Grassy Knoll Institute scores 4 out of 5 shots and recommends Hungry Howie's for dinner.

San Francisco Chinese Pizza

Chinese Pizza In San Francisco
Walking the streets of San Francisco, I happened upon this pizza shop in an out-of-the-way corner. I was hungry and decided to enter. It did not have the appearance of a standard pizza shop, but hey, there was a picture of a slice of pizza on the sign outside so it had to be good, right! I ordered a slice of cheese pizza with sausage and pepperoni.

This is what I got. I will say, it mostly resembled a slice of pizza, it certainly was triangular, and flat. But I was looking for taste. And,... well,... it wasn't awful. It was warm, which was a plus, the crust wasn't stale, the sauce from a jar, the cheese from a bag, but all in all, it wasn't awful. The price, $3 dollars, which, in San Francisco and being hungry, wasn't awful.

To sum up. It wasn't awful.

The Grassy Knoll Institute scores 2 out of 5 shots and does not recommend Shawerma Chinese Pizza for dinner.

The Smoky Mountain Brewery - Large Pizza

Smoky Mountain Brewery Cheese Pizza
As you can tell, the Smoky Mountain Brewery and Restaurant is one of my favorite places in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. This trip, I decided on their famous home made pizza. I choose BBQ chicken as the topping. During football season, it is better to get to this restaurant early lest you want to wait a while. We got lucky and got squeezed in before the crowd came to watch the many college football games on the numerous flat screen television sets positioned around the restaurant.

As you can see, the pizza was a large, a 12 inch pizza. It was delivered in about 20 minutes, which is pretty damn quick as it takes about that time for the pizza to bake in the oven. The crust was thin and crunchy, the cheese plentiful and  the sauce zesty and good. And oh yea, the BBQ chicken topping was generous and tasty.

The cost was fair, about 14 dollars without tip. The Grassy Knoll Diner awards 4 stars out of 5 to the Smoky Mountain Brewery Pizza and recommends them for dinner.

Pizza Joe's - Breakfast Pizza

A Breakfast Pizza
Usually when I think of pizza, it's for lunch or dinner. When Mike, Rocket Scientist #9 told me about Pizza Joe's breakfast pizza, I had to try it.

As you can see, it is a traditional round pizza, 12 inch size, with regular crust. Instead of pizza sauce and traditional toppings, the breakfast pizza was topped with scrambled eggs, bacon, and cheese.

The pizza was in a traditional box (The word traditional was on sale today so I bought it in surplus) and cut in a traditional 8 slice. And of course the pizza was traditionally hot.

The crust was crunchy, not soggy, and the toppings well cooked. I was a little skeptical at first about the taste, but it was very good. It was like a breakfast omelette without the grease smell or taste or sogginess.

The cost was $8 which was a dollar a slice which was very reasonable. With McDonald's bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit costing around $2 dollars, the pizza was a bargain.

The Grassy Knoll Diner awards 4 out of 5 shots and recommends Pizza Joe's breakfast pizza.

California Pizza - Bacon Pizza

California Dreaming - On Such A Winters Day
While the Mirage Hotel And Casino in Las Vegas has fabulous restaurants for fine dining, it also has the California Pizza restaurant. Don't get me wrong, California Pizza is a fine establishment, with a great menu including some top shelf pizza's, but instead of having the ambiance of Stack Restaurant, it has the feel of a quaint little pizza shop where you can order your favorite pizza and toppings.

We waited in line for roughly 10 minutes, which really isn't bad at all, and were seated and greeted by a friendly waitress. Water and plates were brought to the table in minutes. The waitress took our order and said she would be right back with our drinks.

I ordered the personal 10 inch size pizza with bacon as a topping. Twenty minutes later, it was brought to the table.

The pizza was cooked very well, all the slices were completely cut, (I so hate when pizza shops cannot cut the pizza correctly, missing parts of the crust or not cutting all the way through causing a mess) and the bacon topping was adequate, not generous, but adequate. BTW, the bacon topping was cooked well, not fatty like other pizza shops do.

The pizza tasted good, was of course hot, just came from the oven, and the price was adequate, $15 dollars not including tip.

The Grassy Knoll Diner awards 3 shots out of 5 and recommends California Pizza at the Mirage Hotel for lunch and or dinner.

15$ for a personal pizza seems a little steep, is that standard or Vegas pricing?

LOTGK said

  1. Ben, at the Mirage, it’s pretty standard. A little pricey, as are all the hotel restaurants there.
There was a time in Las Vegas, (And I’m showing my age now) that food was cheap there. I remember steak and eggs for $1.99 at the San Remo hotel (Now Hooters Casino and Restaurant) and the steak was good, not some cheap grade C left overs.
Alas, I also remember the Tropicana Hotel as being nice.

Bruno’s - Large Cheese Pizza

Bruno Brothers Large Cheese Pizza Southern Park Mall
Bruno Brothers Large Cheese Pizza Southern Park Mall
The Southern Park Mall, located in Boardman, Ohio, is the home of Bruno's Pizza shop. They offer several items on their menu, but always go with the home choice. You have the option to order by the slice or the entire pie. Be prepared for a 15-20 minute wait for the entire pie but slices are usually ready after a few minutes in the oven to reheat.

We called in advance for an 18 inch New York style cheese pizza. (New York style is thin crusted pizza) It was ready when we arrived. The pizza box was sturdy, not a flimsy grease seeping out of the bottom type of box. It was well cooked, hot, and the cheese plentiful. The crust was not soggy, nor burnt. And most importantly the pizza slices were cut all the way through. The cost was $17 dollars.

Quattro Restaurant - Houston Texas

Quattro Of Houston
This year the Halloween Trade show took me to Houston, Texas for five fun filled days. After a hard days work we stopped at Quattro restaurant housed inside the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Houston.
Quattro Fresh Bread
We were tired and as we were going to our room we spied Quattro so we decided to stop and eat. The restaurant was dark, I don't mean closed, but very dimly lit. We were seated quickly and as my eyes focused to the cave like lighting, I noticed that there were not many people in the joint. No matter, we waited for the waiter to take our order. Twenty minutes later he arrived at our table. (Perhaps the dim lighting prevented him from finding us) Anyway, about ten minutes later, hot fresh rolls were delivered to our table.
9 Inch Pizza
Wanting to just get a quick bite, I ordered a personal pizza. Just plain cheese. It was another half hour before it was delivered to our table. The cost was $15 dollars for a 9 inch pizza.

As mentioned earlier, the service was glacier like. I walked in clean shaven and left with a beard.

The pizza itself was OK. It was hot, but apparently the cook forgot to cut the pizza in slices. All I had was one of those butter knives. I didn't want to ask the waiter for a knife, it might have taken another 20-30 minutes for him to return.

Zeppe's Pizza - Geneva On The Lake

Zeppe's Pizza Geneva
Geneva On The Lake had a new lunch and dinner offering for the summer of 2010. Introducing Zeppe’s Pizza Parlor. Located on the main strip, Zeppe’s is a no frills style parlor. Basically, it is a pavillion with an oven and counter.
A Slice Of Geneva
Being in a pizza joint, of course I ordered a slice of their finest. At $2.50 per slice I was expecting a large piece of pizza. Instead, I received the slice pictured above. Now don’t get me wrong, the pizza was hot, fresh, and the taste was adequate for a temporary fast food joint, but there were several other pizza options on the strip to compete with with Eddie’s Grill and Capo Pizza close by.

All in all, Zeppo’s pizza was good. However, I will be shocked to see it open this Summer season.

Uptown Pizza Chicken Wings

Uptown Pizza Chicken Wings
Uptown Pizza Chicken Wings
Uptown Pizza in Boardman, Ohio has more than just pizza. They also have wings. I ordered 6 wings cost was $4.49 but beware if you order anything else with them. I called and placed an order for pickup for a pizza and wings. The dude told me 30 minutes. Cool, no problem. I waited the 25 minutes since Uptown is only five minutes away from me. I walked in and announced my name, (Grassy Knoll) and the counter employee looked at my receipt and said just a few more minutes.

Waiting at the counter I saw something move on the ceiling. Don't panic, it wasn't bugs or snakes, but water. It was raining outside and now it was raining inside. Not just a drop or two, but the flow would fill a bucket in a few minutes. (If there was a bucket) I carefully moved my pizza away from the rain that was dropping on the counter. Nothing worth than a wet pizza. My wings were finished and the employee rang up (Not wrung out) my pizza order and I was on my way. As stated before, the pizza was well cooked, and dry. No rain. Sauce and cheese plentiful. Still a little greasy. The wings well cooked and crunchy batter. Good tasting. A little pricey but hey what pizza shop boasts an indoor waterfall.

Cocca’s Pizza Boardman Sucks Pepperoni Roll

Cocca’s Pizza, Boardman, Ohio, consider yourself on notice. I was once a loyal customer of yours, ordering either a pizza, chicken tenders, pepperoni roll, or all of the above roughly once a week. No more! I can tolerate plenty, but your complete lack of customer service and lousy management has put an end to my patronage.

Just about every week I would call for a pizza and an order of chicken tenders. I would then be told twenty or thirty minutes depending on how busy they were for my pick up time. No problem right? Wrong!

Every time I went in to pick up my order, (After waiting the specified amount of time, 20-30 minutes) my pizza would be ready but they always failed to prepare the chicken tenders. The employee would blurt out something like, “Sorry, I forgot to get the tenders ready. It’ll be 10 minutes or so!” Sometimes, the employee would begin to ring up my order and notice the tenders weren’t there and then call back to the other employee’s asking who forgot to put the order in. Many other excuses like above followed.

Now, if they forgot once in a while it would be no big deal. But the last time I ordered, they really screwed up.

As usual, I walked in the doors after 30 minutes and went to the counter and gave them my name. He went back to the oven where my pizza was sitting and put it on the table where the employee’s were making pizza’s. He then looked over the fryer and saw my chicken tenders were not there. BIG SURPRISE!

Then he lied to me. He said my tenders were cooking and would be ready in a minute or two. I said no problem. As promised, the fryer oven buzzed and the employee took the chicken tenders out of the fryer. Then the manager said something like, Wait, those aren’t his tenders. They are for another customer. The manager then proceeded to tell me that another customer ordered after me, (Yes, after me) and it was a large order and he needed the fryer for another 20-30 minutes before he could make my order which he forgot to do in the first place. He then turned away and continued his work.

What The Fuck! I asked why I couldn’t have four of the dozen or so pieces that were just made so my pizza would not get cold and my order would be complete and I could be on my way. He said matter-of-fact, “No, you’re going to have to wait. I have to get this order done for another customer.”

Now, a good manager would have understood the situation, knowing that his employee was at fault and would have remedied the problem right away by giving me the four pieces already done and scrambled to make up a little more time for the customer who has not even arrived yet. Everyone would have been happy. Cocca’s Pizza would still have a long time customer. Instead, he was a complete asshat.

I told him to keep the pizza or shove it up his ass, whichever he preferred. I didn’t stick around to see which option he selected.

With that,
The Grassy Knoll Institute scores Negative 2 out of 5 shots and DOES NOT recommend Cocca’s Pizza Of Boardman for dinner.

Uptown Pizza Youngstown Ohio
Uptown Pizza Youngstown Ohio
Uptown Pizza is right around the corner from us. It is a conveinent place to eat when time is fleeting. (Madness takes it’s toll) I called and placed my order and was told twenty minutes for pickup. Standard, no problem.
Uptown Pizza
Uptown Pizza
I got there about five minutes early and bellied up to the counter to wait for my name to be called out. I love when my name gets called out for pickup. I always tell them either “Grassy Knoll” or “Second Shooter” when they ask for my name.

Anyway, as I was waiting, the phone rang and one of the employees answered. The conversation went something like, “Uptown pizza,” then a pause, then a “Yes mam, we do sell pizza.” Pause. “Yes, we are open right now.” Pause. “Yes, I’m in the store right now.” Pause. “Ok.” Click the phone down, hang-up.

A minute later, the same employee yells out “Second shooter” and looks at me knowing who I am. I pay the man and as I begin to leave, I ask him if they sell pizza here at Uptown Pizza. He burst out laughing.

I must say, the pizza is well cooked, with a firm enough crust, not hard, but a good texture. The cheese was melted and the sauce zesty enough. I ordered sausage on half and it was cooked under the cheese and was a good spicy sausage. The cost was reasonable, at $7.00 for a 12 inch pizza.
One negative, and it’s small, but the pizza itself was greasy, just a little.

The Grassy Knoll Diner scores 3.25 out of 5 shots and recommends Uptown Pizza of Youngstown for lunch and dinner.

Belleria Italian Bread

Of course Italian bread and butter were on the table. It was very good, fresh, and fit the bill.
Belleria Small Pizza

Just because we were at Belleria, I ordered a small 6 inch pizza topped with BBQ chicken. It wasn't as good as i expected. I was hoping the chicken would be cooked more, as well as the pizza. But that wasn't the main order.
Belleria Chicken Parmesan
Belleria Chicken Parmesan
To the main course, Chicken Parmesan and penne pasta. Again, the sauce was very good, zesty, and thick. The penne was well cooked and tasted good. The chicken was lightly breaded, well cooked, and the portion was adequate. The taste, good.

The costs: Small 6 inch pizza, $3.25

Chicago Style Pizza - No, Not Really

Chicago Style Pizza - Not Really
Back in late February this year, I attended the national Halloween trade show in Chicago, Illinois. Once inside the convention center, you are pretty much at their mercy when it comes to breakfast and lunch. To leave the building for lunch would take too much time so we conventioneers dine under the roof.

This year, the convention offered very few choices for sustenance. Choosing the lesser of several evils, I ordered a piece of pizza and a diet Coke. Now I know some of you are thinking, hey, you are in Chicago, home of the famous Chicago style pizza. It has to taste fabulous right? It's Chicago!

Well, as you can see, this piece of pizza had absolutely no style. The only positive was that the pizza was warm. Not hot, but warm. heat lamps were doing their job that day. The crust was flat, a little doughy, and bland. The cheese was present, and that's all I have to say about the cheese. The sauce, well, there was red and orange fluid on the pizza which I guess could substitute for pizza sauce. The taste, well, it was filling and curbed my hunger allowing me to photo more sexy Halloween models in skimpy costumes. The cost, $5 dollars. Per slice. To put that in perspective, an 8 slice pizza would cost $40 dollars.

The Grassy Knoll Diner scores 1.5 out of 5 shots and under regular circumstances would never recommend this pizza. However, with very few food options inside the convention center, we recommend Chicago's Rosemont Convention pizza for lunch.

Belleria Italian Restaurant – Pizza

Belleria Signage
Continuing our tour of restaurants in the Youngstown, Ohio vicinity, we landed at Belleria's Italian Restaurant. I have heard they had good pizza and of course good Italian cuisine. We pulled in and at first thought the place was closed until we saw the neon sign glowing "OPEN"
Belleria Sampler Platter
Belleria Sampler Platter
The hostess was very pleasant and seated us at a table right away. It was not crowded at all, but there were patrons there eating. She took our drink orders and when she returned, we ordered the appetizer platter.

As you can see, everything was battered and deep fried. The platter consisted of onion rings, chicken wings, and chicken tenders plus a collection of sauces for dipping. All were cooked well and tasted good. So far so good.
Belleria Pizza
Belleria Pizza
My main course was a cheese pizza. I know, plenty of other choices but I was rather fancying a slice of pizza at that time. I made sure to make the waitress aware that I did not want green peppers on my pizza.

In about 20 minutes, after the waitress cleared our table of our appetizer, my pizza arrived. Pretty impressive isn't it? Well, as I was cutting a slice, I noticed small green peppers scattered on the pizza. WTF!!! I distinctively ordered the pizza sans the peppers. Knowing that it would take 20-25 minutes to cook another pizza the way I ordered, I decided to buck up and endure. I delicately (As best one can with a knife and fork) picked the peppers off from each slice and pressed on. I only had several slices for the taste of the green peppers was embedded in the god damn pizza.

How did it taste you ask? It sucked! Plain and simple.
ravioli dinner belleria
Ravioli Dinner
Ahh, but here's the conundrum. My darling wife Patty ordered the ravioli and meatballs. Patty states that her meal was not terrible, and it did not suck, but was rather good. The meatballs were average, the ravioli's were good, and the sauce above average. This throws a curve ball into my ranking for Belleria and if I would recommend them or not.

So I fall back on my ranking format.
How was the service? Since my order was incorrect, I would have to say terrible.
How was the food? Again, with my order being incorrect and the pizza tasting like peppers, it was terrible.
How was the presentation? It was nice, adequate, plenty of room at the table, extra napkins, a pizza knife, plates.
How was the price? The appetizer and pizza and coke was around $15 dollars. Not to steep, not to low.

River Rock Deli – Pizza

River Rock
The River Rock Deli, inside the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rosemont, Illinois is a convenient choice for a fast dinner after a long day at the convention center. And with the Transworld Halloween show returning to Chicago in late February 2010, I will again be visiting.

River Rock Pizza
As stated earlier, the River Rock Deli is convenient. I ordered a large sausage and pepperoni pizza, cost was $12 dollars and a Coke. (Yes, this was before my Coke Zero switch) I paid the cashier and took one of the available seats. Twenty minutes later my order was called and I went to retrieve my pizza.
The pizza still came in a box, which I found strange, but hey, I'm not eating the box. (That sounded a little dirty) Of course the pizza was hot, the crust crunchy enough to support the weight of the cheese, sauce, and toppings. (I hate when you order a pizza and the crust is so thin and soggy that it just flops down and all the toppings fall off)

I only had three slices, because the other option, the small, was an 8 inch pizza that looked really small. The Pizza tasted good, nothing special, but not bland either as many pizza's can be.
The Grassy Knoll Diner scores 3 out of 5 shots and recommends River Rock Deli for dinner.

Elmton Struthers Ohio
Elmton Struthers Ohio

The Elmton restaurant and bar is located in Struthers, Ohio, and is an old favorite place to dine. When we arrived, the place was packed, no parking, even in the parking lot across the street. A sure sign that the food and price is right. We waited about 10 minutes for a table to free up. The waitress squeezed us all at a table. Very cozy indeed.
Elmton Chicken Wings
Elmton Chicken Wings
Our waitress came over to our table in a couple of minutes and Patty and I ordered diet Cokes and the famous Elmton wing dings as an appetizer. The wings were brought to our table in about five minutes. Not bad for crowded evening. As you can see the wings were huge, not your standard fare wing dings. Let me tell you, they were very good. The batter coating was crunchy and tasty and the chicken was surprisingly good as well.
Elmton Pizza
Elmton Pizza
Our main course was Elmton's pizza. It took about 20-25 minutes but the wings came first which seemed to make the time go by. The pizza was brought out on a silver platter, steaming hot, just from the oven. The crust was crunchy and thick enough, not soggy. The cheese was melted completely and the sauce zesty enough. But damn, I ordered it with "No peppers" and damn, there they were, baked right in the cheese.

One of my pet peeves concerning pizza is when the pizza slices are not completely cut. For this pizza we had to use butter knives to saw through the pizza to get the slices separated. However, once we did, and then removed the peepers, the pizza was delicious.

Normally, Elmton gets the order right and the pizza is very good tasting. I will let this one incident slide but still deduct for an incorrect order. The rating would be much higher if it were correct.

The Grassy Knoll Diner scores 2.25 out of 5 shots and recommends Elmton restaurant for dinner.
