Kokomo's Steak House - Filet Mignon

Discount Filet
I was in Las Vegas back in March staying at the Mirage for a trade show I was attending. On the night stand in my room was the above card. Usually a steak dinner at Kokomo's costs around $50 dollars so this deal looked very enticing. Basically $20 dollars off sounded like a fantastic deal.

A $30 Dollar Discounted Filet
We arrived around 7:30pm, and the restaurant was busy, but not crowded. We were seated very promptly. The waiter came by to take our order and to bring out some fresh bread. As you can see, I ordered the Filet Mignon and baked potato.

In less than 15 minutes, our dinners were brought to our table. The filet was cooked perfectly, medium well done and butterflied. The baked potato hot with butter only. It was well cooked. (I hate when they add sour cream) The filet was juicy, zero flavor, and tender. The baked potato also tasted excellent.

The Grassy Knoll Diner scores 4.25 out of 5 shots and recommends Kokomo's Steak House at the Mirage Hotel and Casino for dinner. (Especially when it's only $29.99 per dinner)

Hoss’s Steakhouse - Final Dinner Bell

Now Closed
We have been going to Hoss's Steakhouse for years and years. Just a little while ago we received an email stating they were closing their doors and Sunday would be their last day open. Being that Hoss's is one of our favorite spots, we decided to go one more time.
The Salad Bar One More Time
This is where the meal begins. The salad bar. As you can see, it has a center island with two side platforms for breads, soups, cookies, pudding, ice cream, brownies, and much more. As for the salad bar side, lettuce, cheese, olives, carrots, diced hard boiled eggs, ham chunks, bacon bits, and more. The salad bar is a meal in itself, and comes with every entree.
Filet And Baked Potato
I ordered filet mignon and a baked potato. I was told it was the last filet they had. I was a little leery upon hearing this. Nevertheless, I stuck to my order.

And a wise choice indeed. The filet was tender, well cooked, and delicious. It was one of the best steaks I ever had there. And the baked potato was well cooked and very good as well.
Dessert Time
All that was left was dessert. I went for some ice cream and a little piece of apple strudel. My son decided on ice cream as well with sprinkles on top. I should say, he went with sprinkles with ice cream. He accidentally spilled them all over the table.

Lastly, the waitress, one that we had several times, came over, and as a reversal of fortunes, asked if she could take our picture. Of course we said yes. We said goodbye and left a larger tip than usual. Goodbye Hoss's Steakhouse.

The Grassy Knoll Diner scores 4.75 out of 5 shots and recommends Hoss's Steakhouse for dinner. Well, I would if it were still open.

Outback Steakhouse - Filet Mignon

Outback Steakhouse Boardman Ohio
Outback Steakhouse Boardman Ohio
My lovely wife Patty convinced me to go to Outback for dinner. Let it be known there wasn't much convincing to be done, but that's between you and me.

We walked it and got a table right away. they had just opened and plenty of tables were available. The waiter came by and explained the specials and took our drink orders. Yeah! They have Coke Zero!
Outback Steakhouse Filet Mignon And Baked Potato
Outback Steakhouse Filet Mignon And Baked Potato
As you can see, I ordered the filet mignon and baked potato. I was allowed two sides, but the others didn't appeal to me so they doubled up the baked potato.

The filet was excellent. Cooked exactly as ordered. Medium well. It was hot, juicy, and flavorful. It was one of the best steaks I have had. And that is saying a lot. Not an ounce of fat as the entire cut was choice filet. It was served in a timely manner.

The baked potato was well cooked as well. The butter melted through and the bacon bits was a nice added touch. The Coke Zero was a bottomless glass and was refilled twice without asking.

The service was very good, the waitress very attention and knowledgeable and very efficient. The cost was about $20 dollars without tip.

The Grassy Knoll Diner scores 4.5 out of 5 shots to the Outback Steakhouse and recommends them for lunch and dinner.

Michael’s Gourmet Restaurant, Las Vegas

Michael's Restaurant
I had the good fortune to dine at Michael's restaurant housed in the Barbary Coast hotel and casino, Las vegas, Nevada before it closed. News is that Michael's will be opening soon in a new location. I hope they maintain the same excellence in service, ambiance, and cuisine.
Now That Is An Appetizer
Michael's was a small intimate restaurant that oozed old style Las Vegas decorated with plush decor and high back wrap around chairs and a stained glass ceiling, and chandeliers hanging over every table. I don't think there were 50 seats, not tables, seats in the entire restaurant. As we waited for our order to be taken, an appetizer tray was placed on our table full of enticing vegetables. I must have had at least a dozen green olives. And they were huge. And delicious.
Filet Cut Like Butter
Although Michael's was well known for it's imported Dover Sole, I chose of course the Filet Mignon. An atomic sized baked potato and stuffed tomato accompanied the filet. It was a very wise decision. The filet was huge, juicy, tender, and delicious. It was cooked exactly as ordered.
Nuclear Chocolate Covered Strawberries
After dinner, a dessert tray was presented with many delectable treats. I opted for just one enormous multi chocolate flavored strawberry.
After Dinner Fruit Basket
A fruit tray followed of which I sampled the several varieties of grapes. The cost, well, let's put it at very expensive. Let's just say around $100 per person. The service was excellent, and the filet was delicious.

The Grassy Knoll Institute awards 5 shots out of 5 and recommends Michael's Gourmet Restaurant when they reopen in the near future at a new location.

OMG my favorite, Michael’s has closed? Booo hooo. Really it was a rare treat and a privledge to have eaten there. I think Hoffa is buried under the tiles of the kitchen. I am going to steal your pix for memories!

  2. Craig said

Michaels has re-opened at Southpoint Casino on the south end of the stip. They literally picked up the place at Barbary and dropped it in the southpoint. Nothing has changed, not even a staff member.

  3. LOTGK said

Craig, thanks for the info. I knew they were re-opening but didn’t know where. And since I am in Vegas right now, perhaps I can make it there this trip.

  4. Ohio J said

WTF- where is the Southpoint Casino? Did you make it there?

  5. LOTGK said

The people i talked to that live in Vegas had not heard that Michaels was up and running anywhere. It’s known that they were going to reopen but have not yet. So no, I did not make it there.

Gibsons Steak House Filet Mignon

Gibsons Steak House - Chicago
Each year I travel to the Transworld Halloween and Party trade show held in Chicago, Illinois. Actually, it’s held in Rosemont, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. And each year, I make it a point to have dinner at Gibson’s Steakhouse. It’s right across the street from the Rosemont Convention center.
As you can see, the tables are tight, not standard size tables, it allows more tables and hence more patrons to be seated. Even with the crowded space, it was plenty of room.

Beating the rush, we were seated without delay and our waiter brought us fresh warm bread and took our drink order. I of course ordered a Coca-Cola and although it had Santa Claus on it, the coke was crisp and fresh, and cold.

Perusing the Menu I noticed the prices were very reasonable. As predicted, I ordered the Filet Mignon, medium well done. It was prepared exactly as I like, was juicy, hot, and very flavorful. The baked potato was large, hot, well cooked, and loaded with butter as ordered.

The cost was just over $40 dollars without tip. The Grassy Knoll Institute awards 4 shots out of 5 and recommends Gibson’s Steakhouse for dinner.

Hoss's Steak House

Hoss's Steak House, New castle, Pennsylvania, is a Ponderosa style restaurant where you order your steak or other selection when you walk you and then you choose your seats. The meal begins with the salad bar. The selections were plentiful, fresh, and clean. You select what you want, and as much as you want.

I also spied some Chicken pasta soup. I was surprised at how good it was. Nice big pieces of chicken. I filled the bowl with shell pasta, chicken, large carrots and celery. I went back for another bowl.

I ordered the 6oz filet, medium well done and baked potato. The steak was sizzling hot and was cooked to my liking. It had absolutely no fat and was very delicious. The baked potato was hot and very tasty as well.

The service was excellent, the food fantastic, and the price, about $15.00 plus tip, was very reasonable. The Grassy Knoll Institute score Hoss's 4.25 Shots out of 5 and recommends Hoss's for dinner.

Gallaghers Steak House - New York

Gallagher's Steak House, located at 228 West 52nd Street, Manhattan, NY.

When in New York, I always try to get to Gallagher's Steak House. Yes, you are correct, there are dozens of quality steak houses in Manhattan but Gallagher's just seems to have the leading edge. Of course, you must arrive early which is the only way to get seated unless you want to wait an easy hour for a table. Get there before 6 and you will be OK.

We were greeted and politely escorted to our table where water and fresh warm bread and rolls were immediately placed on our table. The bread is actually pretzel twists, and when butter is applied, it is a heavenly combination.

gallaghers-steak-house-filet-mignon

Drinks were ordered, (I had a Coke) and then dinner. I ordered, being in a famous steak house, (Gallagher's is well known for its wood fired ovens for steaks and chops that enhance the flavor of the meat) the Filet Mignon, and had it butter-flied for it was such a tall piece, I wanted it cooked more than the normal. I added the Gallagher fries as a side dish.

Drinks were brought right away and after a very short wait, I was spying my filet. Of course it was superb, cooked precisely perfect, tender, juicy, with almost zero fat. The fries, (potato wedges) were crisp, hot, and tasty.

The service was polite, efficient, and professional.

The cost was a little pricey with this meal closing in on $60.00 without tip. The Grassy Knoll Institute highly recommends Gallagher's Steak House and awards 4.75 out of 5 shots.

Peddler Steak House - Gatlinburg

The Peddler Steakhouse of Gatlinburg, Tennessee

The Peddler Sign welcomes you to the best steakhouse in the South. The restaurant is packed every night of the week, and for good reason. The steaks and chops are legendary and delicious. There is always a good 1-2 hour wait depending on the time of arrival. The trick is to eat in the open bar and lounge area. We walk straight in and find an open table. Most people are sipping drinks waiting for a table to open up down stairs but we just inform the waiter that we are eating here.

The waiter brought out a basket of hot delicious rolls with butter. He took our order and we proceeded to the salad bar. My Salad was fantastic with big chunks of ham, real bacon, hard boiled eggs, green olives, celery, carrots, several varieties of grated cheese, tomato, and of course lettuce.

The main entree, Filet Mignon, was prepared medium well and I asked for it to be butterflied to ensure it would be done. It was perfect. Absolutely zero fat on the filet and it was very tender and juicy.A baked potato came with the filet and I smothered it with butter. The cokes were bottomless and crisp.

The service, considering the crowd was exceptional. Our meals were promptly served with a smile.

The cost is a little pricey. The Filet dinner was just over $50.00 without tip.

The Grassy Knoll Institute recommends the Peddler for dinner in Gatlinburg, Tennessee and awards 4 out of 5 stars deducting only for the crowd and the cost.

Treasure Island Steak House

Las Vegas T.I. Steakhouse

The Treasure Island hotel and casino in Las Vegas has several fine eating establishments. Tonight's critique is the Steakhouse restaurant.

Of course, being in a steakhouse, I ordered the Filet Mignon, medium well done, and a baked potato with butter. And yes, a Coke.

The service was quite good, the filet cooked as ordered, and the baked potato loaded with butter. The filet had absolutely zero fat, was juicy, tender, and delicious. The potato was excellent as well as potato's go.

The price was $30.00 for the meal which included bread and rolls. For the quality, the price was good.

The Grassy Knoll Institute rates 4.5 out of 5 shots for the Steakhouse at the Treasure Island.
