Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies - 1973

Alice Cooper Billion Dollar Babies Record Album
Alice Cooper Billion Dollar Babies Record Album
Alice Cooper, the shock rocker of the 1970's, continued his legacy with his unique style of music with his 1973 album, Billion Dollar Babies.

The Billion Dollar Baby album cover is snake skin green with a small yellow gold emblem with a picture of a baby with typical Alice Cooper eye dressings.

When you open the album jacket, on the left side are trading cards perforated to easily remove. The trading cards were of the band members.

Band Members: Michael Bruce, Neal Smith, Glen Buxton, Dennis Dunaway, and of course Alice Cooper.

The other trading cards are of the band on stage plus the jacket cover and of course the icon of the album, the billion dollar baby.

Alice Coopers real name: Vincent Damon Furnier.

The right inside offers no real information on the album or the band. However, it has a band wrapper cut into it that held a very large billion dollar bill.

This album jacket has an inner cover tucked away on the left side. When you peel back the outer layer you see the enlarged One Billion Dollar Bill. It also contains the album song list.

Side One: Hello Hooray, Raped And freezin, Elected, Billion Dollar Babies, Unfinished Sweet

Side Two: No More Mister Nice Guy, Generation Landslide, Sick things, Mary Ann, I Love the Dead

The back cover is an almost carbon copy of the front cover with the gold icon on each side. The front depicting a baby with the iconic Cooper black eyes and the back cover revealing several songs inside the album and several smaller gold babies.

The album jacket has a great photo of the band members dressed in white satin with Cooper holding a naked baby covered only by American currency.

Of course the baby is decked out in the classic Cooper black eyes. In 1973, this was a shocking picture. Thousands of complaints by parents were logged to Warner Brothers, the record label to have the pictures removed. They were not.

The back of the album jacket housed the lyrics of the songs from the album. The hit song of the album was No More Mister Nice Guy. Elected was also a hit along with the title song, Billion dollar Babies.

Below are the lyrics of No More Mister Nice Guy:

I used to be such a sweet, sweet thing
Till they got a hold of me
I opened doors for little old ladies
I helped the blind to see
I got no friends ’cause they read the papers
They can’t be seen with me
And I’m gettin’ real shot down
And I’m feelin’ mean

No more Mister Nice Guy
No more Mister Clean
No more Mister Nice Guy
They say he’s sick, he’s obscene

I got no friends ’cause they read the papers
They can’t be seen with me
And I’m feelin’ real shot down
And I’m gettin’ mean

No more Mister Nice Guy
No more Mister Clean
No more Mister Nice Guy
They say he’s sick, he’s obscene

My dog bit me on the leg today
My cat clawed my eye
Mom’s been thrown out of the society circle
My dad’s has to hide
I went to church incognito
When everybody rose the Reverend Smith
He recognized me punched me in the nose

He said, no more Mister Nice Guy
No more Mister Clean
No more Mister Nice Guy
They say he’s sick, he’s obscene

Led Zeppelin - Houses Of The Holy - 1973

Led Zeppelin Houses Of The Holy Record Album
Led Zeppelin Houses Of The Holy Record Album
The year 1973 was a mere two years from the explosion of disco music and the down fall of modern society. Led Zeppelin released their fifth album, Houses Of The Holy. This album actually had a title, unlike the previous offering, unofficially known as Led Zeppelin IV. However, the rock band stayed with their bizarre artistic view by not having any words on the album cover. You had to buy the album and crack the plastic protective sheet to explore the lyrics and song titles.

What is the first thing you see when looking at this cover? Perhaps these are outcasts from the movie Splash, starring Darryl Hannah as the sexy nude mermaid coming ashore to mate with Tom Hanks. Perhaps a sequel to the Stepford Wives, Stepford Daughters. Perhaps albino zombies attacking. Yes, a total WTF album cover.

The back cover of Houses Of The Holy doesn't offer up any clues as well. No name, no album title, no band members, no year recorded, not a single word or hint of who released the album.

You must remember, this was 1973, way before the Internet, before MTV, before MP3 players. Listening to the FM radio was the base of music knowledge. When we heard a song or album we had to have, we actually had to go to a record store, browse the rows of albums offered, choose our selection, stand in line and pay cash for our record. Finding Houses Of The Holy was somewhat difficult. One had to ask what album was the new Led zeppelin vinyl. Some record stores rectified this problem by adding a sticker to the outside plastic wrapper denoting Houses Of the Holy.

The inner cover stays with the non disclosure theme. Simply a panoramic view of an old English castle on a hill-side with one naked man holding a naked woman over his head. Perhaps he is sacrificing her to the Gods.

Finally, once inside the album, the vinyl sleeve offered the album title, song titles and lyrics, band members, year recorded, and all the other album information.

Led Zeppelin is comprised of four band members. Robert Plant - Vocals, Jimmy Page - Guitar, John Paul Jones - Bass and Organ, John Bonham - Drums.

Album Tracks:
Side One: The Song Remains The Same, The Rain Song, Over The Hills And Far Away, The Crunge.
Side Two: Dancing Days, D'Yer Mak'er, No Quarter, The ocean.

Over the Hills And Far Away was the album's radio air time hit. The exact lyrics follow.

Hey Lady - you got the love I need,
Oh may Be - more than enough.
Oh, Darling Darling Darling walk a while with me,
Oh, you got so much, so much, so much.

Many have I loved,
Many times been bitten,
Many times I've gazed,
Along the open road.

Many times I've lied,
And many times I've listened,
Many times I've wondered,
How much there is to know.

Many dreams come true,
And some have silver linings,
I live for my dream,
And a pocketful of gold.

Mellow is the man,
Who knows what he's been missing,
Many many men,
Can't see the open road.

Many is a word,
That only leaves you guessing,
Guessing' bout a thing,
You really ought to know.
You really ought to know.
I really ought to know.

Sidenote: The lyrics printed in the liner notes are not exactly what is listed above. Also, for the record, Led Zeppelin was not the "Panty wetter" music many claimed it to be. Just sayin.

Add caption
The back cover has informative liner notes written by Scott Regen recalling his experience attending the live performance of that night. A picture at the bottom left is a snap shot of the Four Tops on stage.

The vinyl record has the iconic Motown logo. Reach Out I'll Be There, (Side one, Track five) is one of my all time favorite tunes. The lyrics are below.

Now if you feel that you can't go on (can't go on),
Because all of your hope is gone (all your hope is gone),
And your life is filled with much confusion (much confusion),
Until happiness is just an illusion (happiness is just an illusion),
And your world around is crumbling down, darlin',
(Reach out) Come on girl reach on out for me,
(Reach out) Reach out for me,
I'll be there with a love that will shelter you,
I'll be there with a love that will see you through,

When you feel lost and about to give up (to give up),
Cause your life just ain't good enough (just ain't good enough),
And your feel the world has grown cold (has grown cold),
And your drifting out all on your own (drifting out on your own),
And you need a hand to hold, darlin'
(Reach out) Come on girl reach out for me,
(Reach out) Reach out for me,
Hah, I'll be there to love and comfort you,
And I'll be there to cherish and care for you,

(I'll be there to always see you through,
I'll be there to love and comfort you),
I can tell the way you hang your head (hang your head),
Your not in love now, now your afraid (you're afraid),
And through the tears you look around (look around),
But there's no piece of mind to be found (no piece of mind to be found),
I know what your thinking,
You're alone now, no love of your own, but darling,
(Reach out) Come on girl reach out for me,
Reach out (Reach out).......... just look over your shoulder,
I'll be there to give you all the love you need,
And I'll be there you can always depend on me,
I'll be there to always see you through,
I'll be there to love and comfort you

Electric Light Orchestra - Discovery - 1979

E.L.O. Discovery Record Album
E.L.O. Discovery Record Album
The Electric Light Orchestra was a band that I liked to refer to as a "Rock Opera" band. Perhaps because they spoof the classical genius Beethoven using music from his Fifth Symphony. One of E.L.O.'s hit songs was Roll Over Beethoven. (Not covered on this album though)

The cover is a dark background with a man in a turban, (Reminds me of Ali Baba and his 40 thieves or Jason and the Argonauts) and he's holding a round colorful disc with ELO illuminated in the center. (Seriously, the disc looks like the old time electronic game Simon, a game to test your memory.) At the top is the bands name in light blue with the album title (Discovery) directly below in a burnt orange color.

The back cover of the ELO Discovery album depicts a scene from an Arabian palace, complete with a guard wielding a sword.

The top left corner has the song titles listed. The songs are:
Shine A Little Love - Confusion - Need Her Love - The Diary of Horace - Wimp - Last train To London - Midnight Blue - On The Run - Wishing - Don't Bring Me Down

All music and lyrics by Jeff Lynne
Bottom left has the Jet records logo, released in 1979 by CBS Records.

The inside cover art is a panoramic view of the same man on the cover in the desert seemingly running away from a horde of sword wielding Arab Charger riding men. And there's that Simon electronic game again. See, it does help to improve your memory.

On the far left in powder blue lists the band members. They are:
Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan, Richard Tandy, Kelly Groucutt

The Album sleeve has photo's of the band members and the instruments that they play. Notice the porn mustache Kelly Groucutt is sporting. It was the 1970's mind you.

The flip side of the album jacket has the song lyrics to each song. Top center has a photo of the Electric Light Orchestra in concert. A multi colored lighted space ship hovers above the band. (A big Simon electronic memory game)

This album produced two top 40 hits. Shine A Little Love and Don't bring Me Down. If you like rock music with an classical orchestra backing them up, you will love E.L.O.

Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac 1975

Fleetwood Mac Fleetwood Mac Vinyl Album
Fleetwood Mac Fleetwood Mac Vinyl Album
Fleetwood Mac released its tenth album in July of 1975 and after a year on the charts reached number one on Billboards Album charts. This is the second album also titled Fleetwood Mac with the original released in 1968.

John Mcvie is on the left holding the cane and sipping champagne and Mick Fleetwood, who is the tallest member of the band, is depicted as very short juggling the world with the band revolving.

Fleetwood Mac album back cover has a photo of the band inside a bathroom. Band members from left to right are, Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, And John McVie.

At the bottom of the back cover: The song titles are listed in the first two rows, the band members in the third row, and the legal mumbo jumbo in the fourth row.

Side One: Monday Morning, Warm Ways, Blue Letter, Rhiannon, Over My head, Crystal.
Side Two: Say You Love Me, Landslide, World Turning, Sugar Daddy, I'm So Afraid.

The front side of the liner notes had the lyrics to each side. The biggest hit from the album was Rhiannon, sung by Stevie Nicks. The exact lyrics are below.

Rhiannon rings like a bell through the night
And wouldn't you love to love her
She rules her life like a bird in flight
And who will be her lover..

All your life you've never seen
A woman - taken by the wind
Would you stay if she promised you heaven
Will you ever win...

She is like a cat in the dark
And then she is the darkness
She rules her life like a fine skylark-
And when the sky is starless-

All your life you've never seen-
A woman - taken by the wind
Would you stay if she promised you heaven
Will you ever win...
Will you ever win..

Taken by the sky (Repeat three times)

Dreams unwind
Loves a state of mind (Repeat three times)

Please not that the lyrics on the liner notes do not match up. Perhaps space was at a premium and the lyrics were condensed.

The back side of the liner notes contained the lyrics to the flip side of the album. Playful penguins were scattered on the page.

This album is a Warner Brothers Records, song selections published by Rockhopper Music, 1975.

This album propelled Fleetwood Mac to new heights of popularity. I remember in late 75 and 76 this album dominating the airwaves. It was also the time I got my drivers license and i couldn't wait to blast the 8-Track of Fleetwood Mac with the bass turned up high in my car.

Good times, good times,

Dreams unwind, love's a state of mind.

Beatles - Revolver Album - 1966

The Beatles Revolver Record Cover
The Beatles Revolver Record Cover

The Beatles Revolver album was released in the Summer of 1966, an album where the Beatles introduced their psychedelic sound and lyrics. It was also part of the 'Paul Is Dead' hoax that the band was playing on the public. (It is alleged that Paul McCartney died in a car crash and John, George, and Ringo covered the death up and replaced Paul with a look-a-like)

Beatles Revolver Back Cover
Beatles Revolver Back Cover
The back cover is set in a dark recording studio with the Fab Four sitting comfortably wearing sunglasses in the dark.

Revolver offered 11 tracks with Paul on lead vocals on five of them, George on three tracks, Jon on two, and Ringo with one.

Side One Tracks: 1) Taxman 2) Eleanor Rigby 3) Love You To 4) Here There And everywhere 5) Yellow Submarine 6) She Said She Said

Side Two Tracks: 1) Good Day Sunshine 2) For No One 3) I Want To Tell You 4) Got To Get You into My Life 5) Tomorrow Never Knows

The song Got To Get You Into My Life angered parents in the 1960's. They believed the lyrics spoke of heroin drug addiction and that the Beatles condoned the use. The exact lyrics are below. You be the judge.

I was alone, I took a ride,
I didn't know what I would find there
Another road where maybe I could see another kind of mind there

Ooh, then I suddenly see you,
Ooh, did I tell you I need you
Every single day of my life

You didn't run, you didn't lie
You knew I wanted just to hold you
Had you gone, you knew in time, we'd meet again
For I had told you

Ooh, you were meant to be near me
Ooh, and I want you hear me
Say we'll be together every day

Got to get you into my life

What can I do, what can I be,
When I'm with you I want to stay there
If I'm true I'll never leave
And if I do I know the way there

Ooh, then I suddenly see you,
Ooh, did I tell you I need you
Every single day of my life

Got to get you into my life
Got to get you into my life

I was alone, I took a ride,
I didn't know what I would find there
Another road where maybe I could see another kind of mind there

Then suddenly I see you,
Did I tell you I need you
Every single day...

Steely Dan - Aja - 1977

Steely Dan Aja Record Album
Steely Dan Aja Record Album
It was 1977. I was a senior in high school. Steely Dan released a new record called Aja, their follow up album to their critically acclaimed 1976 The Royal Scam record. Aja was a welcome alternative to the disco era tunes that flooded the airwaves. Yes kids, we listened to the FM radio for our music. We didn't have Ipod's and MP3 players.

The cover is basic black, with the title of the album, Aja, in red at the top right with the Steely Dan in white lettering below it. On the left, you have to look closely, is a picture of a Chinese woman's profile. A red and white ribbon streak down the center of the album.

Steely Dan is comprised of two music legends. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. They are pictured on the bottom left side of the album jacket. There is plenty of liner notes written by Michael Phalen who was invited to observe a Steely Dan recording session and then to report back to a prominent European publication. Alas, things went sour as Fagen and Becker confiscated his tape recorder and notes once they learned who he was.

The liner notes continued on the right inside jacket. Oddly enough, the European publication went belly up before Phalen could publish his story. However, a year later, Fagen and Becker invited him to write the liner notes for their new album, Aja. He accepted and it is what you see here on the jacket.

Also part of the liner notes are from the president of ABC Records, Steve Diener. He touts how great and modern the album sounds.

The back cover of Aja is dressed in black with the song titles listed on the top left corner in white lettering.

Side One offered: Black Cow, Aja, Deacon Blues. Side Two offered: Peg, Home At last, I Got The News, Josie.

Peg was the song that got the most air time on the radio and made it to number 4, while Deacon Blues made it to number 11 and Josie made the top 20.

The dust cover contains all the lyrics from the album along with the musicians who assisted in creating the album.

Lyrics to the hit single Peg are below.

I've seen your picture
Your name in lights above it
This is your big debut
It's like a dream come true
So won't you smile for the camera
I know they're gonna love it

I like your pin shot
I keep it with your letter
Done up in blueprint blue
It sure looks good on you
And when you smile for the camera
I know I'll love you better

Peg
It will come back to you
Peg
It will come back to you
Then the shutter falls
You see it all in 3-D
It's your favorite foreign movie

Prince - 1999 - 1982

Prince 1999 Record Album
Prince 1999 Record Album
I promised to rescue more old vinyl records from my basement this year than the measly three critiques from 2009. To kick off 2010, we'll start with an album titled 1999, written and produced by Prince, who would be later known as some unpronounceable symbols and then known as the artist formerly known as Prince, and then back to Prince.

Hidden on the front cover is the introduction of his band, The Revolution. Inside each letter and number, is a small cartoon of a city scape, a pair of eyes, a cemetery, a guitar, pants, a church, and a person running.

This album brought two huge hits for Prince, 1999, the album title, and Little Red Corvette. Prince liked to use the slang words, U for you, 2 for to, and Cuz for cause. As in the lyrics of Little Red Corvette.

I guess I should have known by the way U parked your car sideways
That it wouldn't last
You're the kinda person that believes in makin' out once
Love 'em and leave 'em fast
I guess I must be dumb cuz U had a pocket full of horses
Trojan and some of them used
But it was Saturday night, I guess that makes it all right
And U say - "What have I got to lose?"

I say Little Red Corvette
Baby, you're much too fast
Little Red Corvette
U need a love that's gonna last

Guess I should have closed my eyes when U drove me to the place
Where your horses run free
Cuz I felt a little ill when I saw all the pictures
Of the jockeys that were there before me
Believe it or not, I started to worry
I wondered if I had enough class
But it was Saturday night, I guess that makes it all right
And U say - "Baby, have U got enough gas?"
Oh yeah!

Little Red Corvette
Baby, you're much too fast
Little Red Corvette
U need to find a love that's gonna last

A body like yours ought to be in jail
Cuz it's on the verge of being obscene
Move over, baby, gimme the keys
I'm gonna try to tame your little red love machine

Little Red Corvette
Baby, you're much to fast
Little Red Corvette
Need to find a love that's gonna last

Little Red Corvette
Honey, U got to slow down
Little Red Corvette
Cuz if U don't, you're gonna run your little red corvette right in the ground
Right down to the ground
U, U, U got to slow down
Little Red Corvette
You're moving much too fast, to fast
Need to find a love that's gonna last!

Girl, U got an ass like I never seen, Owww!
And the ride...
I say the ride is so smooth, U must be a limousine

Owww!
Baby, You're much to fast
Little Red Corvette
U need a love, U need a love that's, ahh, that's gonna last
Little Red Corvette
Babe, U got 2 slow down
Little Red Corvette
Cuz if U don't, cuz if U don't
You're gonna run your body right into the ground
Right into the ground
Right into the ground

Little red corvette

The back cover of 1999 is prince purple with red lettering and the song titles in white. The lyrics to 1999 is in the bold red letters.
I was dreaming when I wrote this, So forgive me if it goes astray.
But I woke up this morning and I could have sworn it was judgement day.
The sky was all purple there was people running everywhere.
Trying to run from the destruction but you know I didn't even care.
Because they say 2000 zero zero party over oops out of time.
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999.

Side One Songs: 1999, Little Red Corvette, Delirious
Side Two Songs: Let's Pretend We're Married, D.M.S.R.
Side Three Songs: Automatic, Something In the Water, Free
Side Four Songs: Lady Cab Driver, All The Critics Love U In new York, International Lover

At the top, it highlights that actual speeches including his Inaugural Address, Civil Rights, Cuban Rockets, (Cuban Missile Crisis) Nixon-Kennedy Debate, Alliance For Progress, New Frontier, Berlin Wall, Etc.

All royalties from the sale of this album are being donated to the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation for research on mental retardation.

Vinyl Kennedy Record
There were no inside covers, just a standard two sided record jacket. Not even the sleeve had any artwork. Just a standard generic sleeve. The record itself had one track on each side. I believe i have the 2099th record pressed in the run. Etched in the return grooves is the number JFK 2099A3. The B side has JFK 2099B1 etched in the return grooves.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy was our 35th president, the first and only Catholic faith president. This one sentence spoken by Kennedy during his Inaugural Address, January 20th, 1961, "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country." has been etched in the heart and minds of many Americans, young and old. They are very wise words, especially for today.

Jim Morrison - Morrison Hotel - 1970

The Doors Morrison Hotel Album Cover
The Doors Morrison Hotel Album Cover
The Doors Fifth album, Morrison Hotel, 2nd to the last album before his demise, was not a chart topping album but still had plenty of insight to his legendary style of lyrics. The Doors music style could be described as acid rock and hard rock.

Released in February of 1970, the band was pictured inside the Hard Rock Cafe, with Morrison dressed in a white peasant shirt. Rooms were $2.50 and up!

The cover background was army green, with blinds pulled up revealing the band members. At the top center, the band name, THE DOORS printed in white.

Jim Morrison died July 3rd, 1971, at the age of 27, in Paris France. He was at the height of his popularity and the details concerning his death bred many conspiracy theories that the Lizard King faked his death and is still alive. The crux of the conspiracy, since he died in Paris, an autopsy was not performed on the body opening speculation that he died from a heroin overdose, cocaine abuse, committed suicide, and was murdered.

Some believe he went to Paris to get out of the limelight, grew a beard, changed his appearance, and staged his own death to avoid all the media hype that followed him every where he went. A movie, Eddie And The Cruisers was loosely based on Morrison. Eddie faked his death and later returned home and started up a new band only to be found out by his best pals.

The album inside jacket offered zero information about the band, lyrics, or songs. The left side of the jacket was merely two band members at the bar, supposedly the Hard Rock Cafe bar.

The right side of the jacket is a continuation of the left side, a picture of the band members at the bar.

The back cover shows several old men coming and going to the Hard Rock Cafe. It also offers the band members, Jim Morrison, Robbie Kreiger, Ray Manzarek, John Densmore, Ray Neopolitan.

Side one offered: Roadhouse Blues, Waiting For The Sun, You Make Me Real, Peace Frog, Blue Sunday, Ship of Fools.
Side two offered: Land Ho!, The Spy, Queen Of The Highway, Indian Summer, Maggie M'Gill.

The vinyl record was pressed by Elektra Records out of New York City.

Lyrics to the hit single, Roadhouse Blues is tricky at best. One stanza is nonsensical lyrics, you decide what Jim Morrison's message is.

Roadhouse Blues
Yeah, keep your eyes on the road, your hands upon the wheel
Keep your eyes on the road, your hands upon the wheel
Yeah, we're goin' to the Roadhouse
We're gonna have a real
Good time

Yeah, back at the Roadhouse they got some bungalows
Yeah, back at the Roadhouse they got some bungalows
And that's for the people
Who like to go down slow

Let it roll, baby, roll
Let it roll, baby, roll
Let it roll, baby, roll
Let it roll, all night long

Do it, honey, do it

You gotta roll, roll, roll
You gotta thrill my soul, all right
Roll, roll, roll, roll
Thrill my soul
You gotta beep a gunk a chucha
Honk konk konk
You gotta each you puna
Each ya bop a luba
Each yall bump a kechonk
Ease sum konk
Ya, ride

Ashen ladies, Ashen ladies
Give up your vows, give up your vows
Save our city, save our city
Right now

Well, I woke up this morning, I got myself a beer
Well, I woke up this morning, and I got myself a beer
The future's uncertain, and the end is always near

Let it roll, baby, roll

Let it roll, all night long

Late in 1971, a greatest hits double album of the Rolling Stones was released in the United States. It was titled, The Rolling Stones, Hot Rocks 1964-1971. It became one of the best selling selling albums not just for the Stones, but for all rock albums. And this was an album the Stones didn't want released.

The album cover depicts a profile of Mick Jagger expanding to the borders of the album. No other hint on the title of the record or the band name.

The back cover has the band members set against a wall of a castle. At first glance, one would think they were dressed in Medieval attire. But look again. That is how they dressed in the 60's. I believe this is where Austin Powers got his English look.
