Carnegie Deli - Turkey Sandwich

Carnegie Deli
The hamburger at the Carnegie Deli was so good that we returned for a second visit on our last trip. This time I ordered the turkey breast and American cheese sandwich on a Kaiser roll.
Turkey And Cheese On kaiser Roll
As was the last time, the service was quick and courteous and the order correct. The turkey was piled high, (Not as high or as much as the Stage Deli in NY, but who's is?) and the cheese fresh and plentiful. The roll was fresh and not hard.

Although this sandwich does not compare to the Stage Deli turkey sandwich, it was good tasting and priced right. (About $14.00 without tip)

The Grassy Knoll Deli awards 3.5 shots out of 5 and recommends the turkey sandwich at the Carnegie Deli inside the Mirage Hotel.

Alcatraz Pier 33 Cafe Sandwich

The Rock - Alcatraz Island
We were in San Francisco recently and of course we had to go and visit the Rock, Alcatraz Island and prison. We left from pier 33 and spent almost the entire day on the island exploring the grounds and prison. (I highly recommend Alcatraz Island as a must see when in San Francisco) One caveat, the island does not permit any food or beverage on the island except for bottled water.

After spending approximately 7 hours on the rock, we were starving. Stepping off the boat that transported us back to Pier 33, we ventured into a souvenir shop and small cafe in search for a quick fix of food. As we waded through souvenir row we spied the food counter. It was old style cafeteria. Grab your tray, shuffle it down the counter and select a pre-made sandwich, salad, or other snack. (I felt a little like Blutto from the movie, Animal House)
Turkey And Cheese
I selected the turkey and cheese sandwich. At least I thought I did. It looked more like baloney but I was hungry. I added a Coke Zero to wash it down. This feast cost me $12 dollars, $9 dollars for the sandwich and $3 dollars for the Coke Zero.

The sandwich was stale. Even the baloney turkey. It was edible, barely. I still don't know if it was turkey or some other mystery meat. Hell, it may not have even been meat. The Coke Zero was the saving grace. after drinking water all day, the Zero was a much needed bonus. Twelve dollars for this, not even close to a value. The Cafe is lucky Alcatraz is closed for charging that kind of money for that quality of food is a capital crime. I can almost sympathize with the inmates assigned to Alcatraz and the food they were forced to eat.

The Grassy Knoll Diner scores 1.5 out of 5 shots and does not recommend Pier 33 Alcatraz Cafe for lunch or dinner.

Stage Deli - Hot Turkey Sandwich

Stage Deli Broadway Hot Turkey Sandwich
Stage Deli Broadway Hot Turkey Sandwich
Revisiting one of my favorite restaurants, the Stage Deli, located on Times Square in Manhattan, New York, I opted for the hot turkey sandwich with gravy and mashed potatoes.

As usual, the Stage was packed but we were lucky to get a small table by the windows. Our waiter came right over and asked for our drink orders and if we wanted any appetizers. Being a veteran of the Stage Deli and the size of their portions, we ordered Cokes only and declined appetizers knowing the proportions are just as large as the main dinner items.

In under 10 minutes, our waiter brought our dinner order to our table. As you can see, the portion was huge. The turkey breast was piled high, hot, tender, and juicy. Not processed but carved from the breast. The gravy was hot and thick. The mashed potatoes were real, not processed and as mentioned above, very good. Two pieces of bread under the turkey and potatoes completed the entree. The cost was very affordable for New York, $15 dollars before tip.

The Grassy Knoll Diner scores 4.5 out of 5 shots and recommends Stage Deli for dinner.

Quizznos $5 Dollar Sub Deal - Turkey, Cheese, Bacon

Quizznos Turkey Sub
Quizznos Turkey Sub
I stopped at the Quizznos restaurant off Lockwood Blvd and Route 224 for dinner tonight. I saw all the commercials from Subway and from Quizzno's. Both joints are touting $5 dollar foot long sandwiches. Well, feast your eyes upon Quizznos version of the $5 dollar sub.

To begin with, the sub above was not a foot long. More like 9 inches. I measured when I got home.

Next, this so-called giant sub had three slices of turkey. Yes kids, that's right, three thin slices of turkey. Not anything remotely similar to what the commercials on TV depict. This is blatant false advertising at it's finest.

Moving on, the sandwich had two pieces of cheese. Yup, just two pieces of cheese. Cut in half and spread on the bun.

To top it off, the bacon was pieces, but just by eye balling the sandwich, it was not more than two standard slices of bacon.

The cost was $5.00 for this sandwich. Let's take a minute and analyze the ingredients of this sandwich. three slices of turkey. I can buy a pound of turkey at the local Giant Eagle grocery store for $4.99 which consists of approximately 25 slices, or about 20 cents a slice.

The bacon is $1.99 a box, which is 15 slices, or 13 cents a slice.

The cheese is $4.99 per pound which is 20 slices or 25 cents a slice.

The bun is $1.99 for an eight pack of sub buns, which is 25 cents a bun.

Let's add it all together. 60 cents turkey, 26 cents bacon, 50 cents for cheese, and 25 cents for the bun. Grand total $1.61 for the sandwich. Keep in mind that Quizznos has to have better costs than my retail prices.

The Grassy Knoll Diner is highly disappointed in Quizznos pathetic attempt at a $5 dollar foot long sandwich and we award only 1 shot out of 5 and DOES NOT RECOMMEND them for lunch, dinner, or any event of any kind.

Stage Deli - New York City

Stage Deli, Times Square, New York City

This sandwich was so good, I posted it twice......

Just a quick walk from David Letterman's theater is the Stage Deli restaurant where legend has it the portions are so huge you will not be able to finish it. The Grassy Knoll Institute needed to investigate post haste.

Upon arrival, the joint was packed but the waiter squeezed us in at a table that looked out to the street. Although we were piled in, we were comfortable. The service was exceptional. Although the deli was crowded, the hostess seated us immediately and even obliged our request to sit by a window. In just a matter of minutes, our drinks were on our table and several minutes later our dinner arrived.

I ordered the turkey breast, American cheese, on a Kaiser roll sandwich and of course already drinking the coke provided. Potato pancakes and French fries were also ordered as side dishes.

When my sandwich was brought out, I could hardly believe it. The sandwich was packed so high with turkey and cheese that to eat it, I had to re-distribute the sandwich using the top and bottom of the roll. It was the equivalent of four large sandwiches at other restaurants. And I was staring down two side dishes that were huge as well in portion.

Of course the sandwich was tasty, fresh, and perfect. The coke, a fountain coke, was exceptional as well. The cost was just under $20.00 excluding tip. Remember, the Stage Deli is in the heart of Times Square where everything is expensive. And BTW, I could not finish the sandwich. Not even close.

The Grassy Knoll Institute recommends Stage Deli and it scores a perfect 5 out of 5 shots.
