Lost Update: Wondrous Boat Ride

Lost Update - Season Six - 04/20/2010

Round the world and home again
That's the sailor's way
Faster faster, faster faster

There's no earthly way of knowing
Which direction we are going
There's no knowing where we're rowing
Or which way the river's flowing

Is it raining, is it snowing
Is a hurricane a-blowing

Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing
Are the fires of Hell a-glowing
Is the grisly reaper mowing

Yes, the danger must be growing
For the rowers keep on rowing
And they're certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing

The song above is titled, Wondrous Boat Ride and can be heard in the episode preview for tonight's program. The song is from the movie, Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory. And this is significant folks. One particular line in the song, (There's no earthly way of knowing Which direction we are going) touches on exactly what is happening to the island castaways and sums up my Lost theory.

Just what is the Grassy Knoll Institutes Lost theory….I’ve been waiting six years to tell you…..
Although it appears the survivors of Oceanic flight 815 are on a tropical island, they are being deceived. There is no island. The survivors are in a virtual reality laboratory. All the castaways are interconnected to one another sharing each others thoughts, memories, and feelings. While in this virtual reality laboratory, a battery of physical and mental experiments are performed on them. And who is running these experiments? As Juliet stated, the Aliens of course.

So it finally comes down to this. Willy Wonka! I was waiting for the Oompa Loompa's to throw down a song about why its bad to leave the island. Alas, no Oompa's break dancing but tonight's episode still had a Wonka feel to it.

Case in point, the lyrics focus on the boat ride the guests took with Wonka. Wonka started chanting strange lines, (Read the lyrics at the top of the post again) and a key line was "There's no earthly way of knowing which direction we are going." As in, is Sawyer and the renegade gang going in the right direction? Should they have left the Smoky group? Should they have allowed Claire on board? Should Sawyer have let Jack jump off the boat? All good questions, all with answers to follow.

But enough with Willy and his chocolate factory for now. We need to focus on Jack, Sawyer, and Sayid. Some very significant things happened to them tonight. Jack was broken, Sawyer was a leader, and Sayid reverted back to the good side.

Waaaaayyyyy back in season one, Jack was the hero, the leader, the man with the plan, the man everyone listened to. A man that wanted nothing more than to get the Hell off the island. Tonight, Jack was a broken man, a man taking orders from Hurley, and from Sawyer. Jack became a follower. And his point of view was a complete 180. He believed he was supposed to stay on the island. Notice how he didn't argue with Sawyer on the boat, and just jumped off the boat into the water?

Some of you are asking So what? Let me explain. As my theory states, the castaways are being experimented on. Jack was the Alpha male in the beginning. After being exposed to a variety of stimuli, Jack became docile, let me say, domesticated. That was Jack's test. What would it take to break him? He is now pliable, open to suggestion. Ready to accept his fate. Whatever it may be.

Next is Sawyer. If you remember, he was a loner, out for himself. Tonight, he was the man with the plan and instead of staking out on his own, he brought the group along to safety. He tells Jack on the boat, you're either with us, or against us. Us being the key word. He was part of the group. Sawyer also did a complete 180 in personality. He was given the means to achieve and do the right thing, and he took it.

Sayid is last. Sayid was the good guy with the Iraqi past. He was always helping, fixing, protecting. Tonight, he is soul less. He made a pact with the devil, sold his soul, for a promise to be with Nadia, the love of his life. A promise that will never be fulfilled. Remember, dead is dead. And Nadia is dead. However, Sayid pulled a 360 tonight. First he was good, then bad, than good again as he lied to Smoky and I'm betting he did not kill Desmond.

All three men have been manipulated to the extreme. All three have felt love, hatred, heartache, and lost the love of their life. All three men traveled the psychological spectrum in approximately 115 days of living on the island. These three men, as all the other castaways, are being tested, manipulated, molded into different people. For what purpose is yet an unknown. To save the world? Perhaps! Or perhaps a more sinister ending. Like the one I have foreseen. (I sound like the Emperor on Star Ward now) I have foreseen it. It is your destiny.)

One last point and then we'll get to the tidbits. The castaways are once again reunited. Jack states that we're all different now. Sort of like a reset to a video game. Changing the skill level, the players, the parameters. Perhaps this is the final level of the game and its time to use what you have learned to win. And sometimes, the only way to win the game, is not to play.

Tidbits From Tonight's Show:

* Smoky admits he took the form of Christian Shepard. Can you believe him? Yea, I sort of do.
* In the side flash, Sun recognized Locke as both were being wheeled in to emergency.
* Claire tells Jack that he already decided to go with Smoky the moment he allowed him to talk. Like it or not, you're with him now.
* Sounds like Satan doesn't it? There's your shout out to all the religion theory folks.
* After the bomb goes off, Smoky says, well, here we go. He is ready for battle as Zoe demands Desmond be released.
* Desmond is at it again in the side flash. This time helping Claire and Ilana. And perhaps Jack as well. Could be the new Jacob huh?
* I thought Claire was going to shoot Kate at the boat. I really did. However, she will get hers later. They all will. Oops!
* In the side flash, Jin tells Sun its OK, we're all going to be fine now.
* Jin and Sun reunited. Touching moment. But it won't last long.
* Zoe captures the Sawyer gang, tells him the deal is off, and they are prisoners.
* Jack swims to the island. Meets Smoky. Nice day for a swim. Bomb explodes. Jack is knocked down. Smoky carries him to safety. Tells Jack, don't worry, you're with me now.
* Jack ready to operate on Locke in the side flash. So Desmond wasn't crazy after all. Jack will heal Locke.

May 23rd is just over a month away for the series finale. What a hell of a boat ride its been. And after six years of episodes and speculation, Willy Wonka stays true to his words when he sings,
There's no earthly way of knowing
Which direction we are going
There's no knowing where we're rowing
Or which way the river's flowing

Until next week. Get Lost.

I didn't hear any Willy Wonka music tonight, just last week in the preview, they teased us. Anyway, with Jack now seperated from Hurley, Lapedius, Kate, Sawyer, Sun, and Jin, no one can leave the island. Maybe Jack realized this and jumped in the water. And realized that MIB won't harm him either because he needs Jack alive to gert on the plane. Jack is back with a vengenace.

  2. Yes, no Wonka music. However, the boat ride was a significant part of the episode. Did they do the right thing? And yes, Jack seems to be returning to his old self. Only one more month of Lost.

  3. Locke will walk! Jack will fix him!

  4. Great episode! Finally, some action. And I'm sure you're aware that the song from the preview was actually Pendulum's, with Wonka's singing. Anyways, I think you're onto something about what you said last week about Jack, or someone, waking up as Jacob from the first episode. I think the whole twist at the end of the series will be that one, or multiple characters, have been fully aware of everything from the beginning. And since we haven't heard from Jacob in a while, it may be safe to say him and Desmond are now one... and maybe they officially became one as soon as Jacob was killed by Ben.

Slowly, the sidetracked characters are recognizing the other castaways, as I think Jack is about to and refuse to operate on Locke.

I also think the last episode will consist of everyone in the sidetracked world together, realizing what had happened simultaneously as Desmond looks down on them from somewhere nearby. Some conclusion about the island will also have to explain the statue and such.. so aliens are still a probable theory...

  5. I think that MIB is Locke in the sideflash....like he made it off the island. Thats why Sun was like "It's him!". Also a good reason why Desmond tried to run him over.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think Jack was baiting MIB. I think he knows everything thats going on and knows the outcome already. He's just watching it play out hoping someone else steps up to stop MIB. That is what Jacob was wanting all along.

    ReplyDelete
  7. If the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit? :D
Or perhaps Jack does fix him in an attempt to break the chain of events.

  8. Happy 420. Smokey was using Christians body in season 1. Is he able to do animals to? Like Vincent perhaps? I have a strong feeling you are right. Cuz with each passing episode the are only leaving a few options open.
    Until next week
    Happy 420.

  9. First, welcome back. We missed you.
Second, I did not know the song was Pendulums, but it makes it fit even more with a name like Pendulum, as in swinging from one extreme to the other. And I do believe Jacob is still there somewhere. If you recall, I mentioned back in season one that perhaps one of the aliens were incognito living among the castaways observing the herd.
Third, yes, I do believe we get two endings, one where they are all together off the island, and all remembered what happened, and the second, on the island, with most of them dead, with a new Jacob and MIB starting all over again.

    Cue Rod Serling epilogue.....

  10. Excellent point Paul. But wouldn't Smoky simply turn to smoke and repair himself. After all, he got shot on the island and it didn't affect him.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I agree. Jack has a plan. He went 180 and is now 360, back to form, back to hero status.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Willy Wonka! Really! I think Dez, Jack, MIB, and Sawyer will battle it out in the end. All the others will be dead.

    ReplyDelete
  13. There are a few people that have been forgotten who are vital players to the end game.

OK, you have waited long enough. Don't forget about Rose and Bernard. Keep in mind, when Juliet and gang happened upon them in the jungle, they were living in Jacob's cabin. Perhaps Rose and Bernard are the aliens incognito observing the castaways.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Agreed many will die. Agreed that Jack will be left standing as well. Sawyer is a dead man walking. Desmond will be slipping in and out (Of consciousness) and of course old Smoky will be blowing smoke up everyone's ass.

    ReplyDelete
  15. By the process of elimination. :D

Whats up with the Willy Womka songs? How does that mean to lost? And if Jack is dead and is now Jacob, then where was Jacob when both he and Jack were on the island.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Smoke Entity4/21/2010 11:37 AM

Maybe the MIB doesn't need Jack alive to get off the island, just like Locke was dead coming back.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Smoke Entity4/21/2010 11:38 AM

Jack only knew him from the chance meeting at the luggage claim at the airport. He didnt remember him from the island.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Smoke Entity4/21/2010 11:39 AM

That will never happen. Rod Serling is dead. Died in the 70's.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Smoke Entity4/21/2010 11:40 AM

What is this 180 360 stuff? Are they part of the Lost numbers?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Smoke Entity4/21/2010 11:41 AM

By the process of elimiantion what?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Smoke Entity4/21/2010 11:41 AM

Maybe there already dead now. Ever think of that?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Smoke Entity4/21/2010 11:42 AM

They were trapped in the 1970's, they wont be back. and they aren't the new Jacob and MIB.

  24. Knowing that everyone on the island is dead or dying, it is all about where your faith is before you enter the kingdom of heavan or the gates of hell. Desmond as I've stated before is a warrior of god. He is good and helps everyone. The fifthteen floor is a symbol of heavan. Claire who has been lead astray is taken to the 15th floor by god's warrior Desmond, and handed over to another one of God's warriors Ilana. She is then reunited with her only brother Jack.... Heavanly isn't it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Next up is Jack who's FAITH is LOST. He decides to go with the MIB and he is killed in an explosion. Since he is already dead, the explosion is the gates of hell opening and when he awakes he is with none other than the devil symbolizing his choice and the sentence of an eternity in hell. That is why MIB says "you are with me now." You only have so much time to decide where your faith lies. Jack's time was up and when the hourglass ran out his faith was in MIB. Jack is now serving an eternity sentence in HELL.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Just asking ten years late,
      What hourglass?
      LOL

  26. Evil comes in all forms. I don't believe MIB is the devil, but I do believe he is employed by satan. The same with Widmore. Neither MIB or Widmore is the correct choice. The bible teaches you to be patient and have faith. The correct choice for the castaways is to wait, and follow no one. Look at Rose and Bernard they did there own thing, and did not caught up in the whole leaving the island idea. The last time we saw them they were happy and seemed worry free. Sawyer was at his happiest when he wasn't worried about leaving the island.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The castaways are becoming more lost with their attempts to leave the island.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Last week in the preview, they played that song and with the boat ride being a pivotal moment in the episode, it seems to fit quite well.

    Answer to your second question.
    On the island.

    ReplyDelete
  29. If ture, then I would think Smoky would have killed them all and then left the island.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Or perhaps he did recognize him from the island.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yes, he did, however, CGI does wonders in today's modern age. Second, perhaps one of the writers would don the Serling suit and end the series.

    ReplyDelete
  32. A 180 is a turn the opposite way. A 360 is returning to where you started.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes, Fox has that covered. Read a few updates back and you will see his theory.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Who said they were trapped in the 70's?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Usually, warriors of God don't kill people. As Desmond has done. Claire has also killed people. In fact, just about everyone on the island has blood on their hands. Not the warriors of God I would think.

    ReplyDelete
  36. According to your theory, how can Jack be killed if he is already dead? And if he did awake after death, why is Satan the default deity to appear. Why not a choice, with Jacob asking the same questions.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I don't think MIB is the devil either. Nor Widmore. Nor anyone on the island. I believe it is merely a test of religious beliefs of some of the castaways. How far would a person go to keep the faith? would you kill in the name of God. Millions upon millions have done the same in our history. Perhaps the aliens want to know why. What triggers the violence in religion.

    ReplyDelete
  38. But its the island with the powers....what if when he leaves his powers are gone

    ReplyDelete
  39. It seems that Desmond is helping the Losties off the island get to where they need to be. Even if he has to run someone over (poor locke and his bad luck). Has anyone told Desmond what he needs to do to fix things?? Can he still see the future? Not just charlies. Why does widmore have interest in the island? And finally......
    HOW DO YOU KILL SMOKEY?

    ReplyDelete
  40. It's getting so exciting. It's finally starting to feel like it's building to the... erm... climax. I want to take it slow and enjoy it, savor it.
Oh right *ahem* we're talking about LOST.

Zoe reminds me of Tina Fey... and or Sarah Palin.

David's mom has to be Juliet, I am sure of it, the blue eyes.

I love how they are all converging at the hospital, it's all coming together, literally and figuratively... maybe sexually.

(Jeez, I think my husband's been on night shift too long.)

    ReplyDelete
  41. scarlett711774/21/2010 7:54 PM

Smokey as Vincent, that's a really interesting idea!

    What about the polar bear?

    ReplyDelete
  42. scarlett711774/21/2010 7:56 PM

Man, I really thought we'd find out who David's mom was! Grr.

I don't know if I think a lot will die or not. Can they die on the island and then still be in the flash sideways/forward?

    ReplyDelete
  43. if jack son is off the island...why does he not wanna leave?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Is it just me or do they all seem to remember the island in the side flash after an emotional event like near death (Dez, Charlie, Sun) or passionate kiss (Hurley). Is Dez trying to make the real Locke remember the island, or maybe wake him from the dead on the island? Hmmm...dunno.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Valid point. The god becomes mortal again.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I believe Desmond has been around the loop a few times. He knows what is going to happen next. It took him several hundred trips to finally become aware of his situation and is now in a position to control not only his destiny, but the others he touches.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yes, I cannot wait until it finally pops! Zoe is the protector of Hydra island, Sarah Palin is our protector from Russia.
Agreed on Juliet being David's mom. Perhaps Sawyer will hook up with her in the side flash.

    About the night shift.....
Nothing wrong with a little Afternoon Delight!

    ReplyDelete
  48. So far, we know of three people Smoky has impersonated. MIB, John Locke, and Christian Shepherd. So why not Vincent.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Of course they can. Remember, they are not dead. They are not on the island. They are in a virtual reality experiment and only believe they are on the island.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Perhaps because it is merely just one outcome out of an infinite amount of possibilities. Or try this on for size.
At this moment, Jack is on the island, and on the mainland, and in the 1970's, and on Flight 815, and a drunk in 2004, and a hundred other scenario's. All at the same time. This is what Desmond has seen and figured out.

    ReplyDelete
  51. It is not just you. Before there were even side flashes, I said that because of the VR program, the castaways felt a sort of Deja Vu as if they all knew each other somehow. Even before boarding the plane. As if they already had lived this scenario. And they did. Many many times.

    ReplyDelete
  52. In a bizarre sort of way, this makes sense. Its like they are living 100 lives all at the same time and some memories seep in and thats where they get the deja vu from. You may just have it Pat.

  54. Attention FOX!
For being a loyal reader and commenter on the Grassy Knoll Institute Lost blog, and for not giving up several weeks ago, here is your official shoutout!

    Are you ready!!!!

I know you are going to be pumped hearing this.....

In the series finale, Jack finds himself in Hell.

There you go! See if you can add to this tidbit of info.

Please don't post this info on any other site to avoid spoiling it for the people not reading the Grassy knoll Institute.

well it will be a sad day on may 23rd when lost goes of the air for the last time, I guess time to find another show even though nothing will replace lost and the ipact it has had on television

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think there have been others like Desmond that interact with the candidates. Like the girl that Sawyer falls for and how she is the same chick that befriends Kate when she sells the fake jewelry

    ReplyDelete
  59. ive known this for a while that jacob and esau(MIB) are brothers like in the bible. jack and kate are their real parents. an imposter acted as their real mother creating the evil. also esau eventually enters ben's body and attempts to kill jack his own father, which he knows . it's all ying and yang and backgammon. roles reversed, good becomes bad, etc etc

    ReplyDelete
  60. They are NOT trapped in the 70's. They were transported to the "present" with the rest of the group when the bomb went off.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Jack made his decision, to stay on the island, a la Jacob. Sawyer has made his, to leave the island, a la MIB. As I have said before, Jack and Sawyer will be the new Jacob and MIB. Kate will die, and Sawyer will never forgive Jack for it, just add it to Julliet. Also, Julliet is Jack's ex-wife in the sideways reality.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Ilana, is dead on the island, but not in the sideways, as well as Nadia, Libby, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Maybe it was just me but when Jack was getting ready to operate on Locke the whole feel of the scene reminded me of when Jack was preparing to operate on Ben. Some of the shots seemed to be the same. It could be nothing...but Ben always lies!

    ReplyDelete
  64. how about kate's "black" horse?

    ReplyDelete
  65. That is just merely one of a thousand said scenario's being played out simultaneously. The experiment is to see which scenario produces the best results.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Agreed, it did remind me of Jack and ben. I almost expected to see Ben under the blanket. But I know better. :D

    ReplyDelete
  67. Him too. Yes, why not.

    ReplyDelete
  68. what isaac said is right. i hate how everyone calls esau mib, makes me sick. gonna be weird to see kate and jack revealed as jacob and esau's parents, wonder how they're gonna do it. also jacob and esau are twins. its true that ben becomes the mib too.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Jack has already chosen to be in hell. When his time ran out his alliance was with MIB. That's what it is all about. As long as you don't pick a side, you are safe. As soon as you pick a side your fate is sealed. If you never pick a side the island just forgets about you. (Rose and Bernard) Thank you for the shout out.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Where did that boat come from anyhow?

    ReplyDelete
  71. It didn't appear that Jack made a choice but that Smoky made it for him, picking Jack up and carrying him to safety.

    ReplyDelete
  72. And you are welcome, you deserved the shout out.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Agreed, there are several boats that seem to appear when needed. Perhaps it is virtual reality.
