Gia’s Pizzeria – Fried Haddock Dinner

Friday night Patty and I on a whim decided to try the new restaurant in town, Gia's Pizzeria, located at 708 Boardman Canfield Road, Youngstown, OH 44512. Its where the old Pizza Hut used to be. There were a good amount of cars in the lot but it wasn't crowded. We walked in and were greeted and seated quite quickly.

Before we sat down our waitress asked us what we wanted to drink. I asked if she had Coke Zero which she said yes and would be right back with them. So far so good.

In a minute or two, our waitress returned with our Cokes and asked what we wanted for dinner. I started with a fried cheese appetizer in marinara sauce. Like the Cokes delivery, the fried cheese was brought out right away.

As you can see, the fried cheese looked good, but upon tasting, it was bland. The sauce tasted store bought and the breading and the cheese had almost no taste. Perhaps the main course would be better.
Gia's Fried Haddock Special

I ordered the beer batter haddock dinner with macaroni and cheese. Again, the fish looked good but it tasted horrendous. The only way I can describe this plate is, Shit On A Shingle! It was the worst piece of fish I ever had. The previous winner of "Worst Fish" was Galaxy Seafood but Gia's is the new king. Patty couldn't believe the fish tasted so bad and took a piece for herself and tasted it. Patty confirmed the Shit On A Shingle comparison. Within a minute, she told me she was going to throw up.

I called for the check and we left promptly. (Never to return again!) Luckily, Patty didn't spew chunks but for the entire next day she got sick just thinking about the haddock.

The service was good and this critique should not reflect badly on the waitress.

The cost of this nightmare was $9.99 for the Friday special plus $4.99 for the fried cheese plus $2 dollars for the Coke Zero. $17 dollars without tip. If the food were edible, this meal would be a good deal. However...

The Grassy Knoll Diner scores 0 out of 5 shots and DOES NOT recommend Gia's Pizzeria for dinner.

If you are going to attempt to talk smack, perhaps you should learn how to spell and use punctuation.

Or perhaps you are still feeling some ill affects from your fish dinner tonight.

Damn, both plates look pretty good to me. I’m the kind of sucker who would have to try it for myself… Then end up puking it up…. Some of us just have to learn the hard way.

The mac and cheese looks good too… Man I’m a sucker.

The Mac and cheese was grudgingly OK. And my wife Patty came close to puking after tasting a piece of the shingle.

Usually, we have a favorable experience at the Blue Plate Special. Very rare do I score zero but this was one of them. I can still taste the fish.

And thanks for calling me brave for tasting fish….

    Shit on a shingle.
    That should be there motto.
Are you ever going to gove them a second chance or just let your critique stand?

They do serve pizza, sort of looked like the shingle. But to be fair, the pizza did look OK. Will I go back, seriously doubt it.

Poor lotgk and patty. I am deeply sorry to hear of your bad experience at Gia’s Pizzeria. I would like to concur with an above post sayin everything is homeade from the sauce to the fish batter. To be honest, cheese with breading is the same everywhere! Sorry you felt it was “bland”. Also the “shit on a shingle” you referred to is an irrelevant analogy for fish. And fyi the motto is love at first slice. I am sorry to hear of your bad experience but I can reccomend a great doctor that can check your taste buds! And one more thing, I understand freedom of speech, but keep your comments to yourself. I am a consistent customer and have tried almost everything on the menu and has not regretted it one bit. For your own sake, please keep your opinions to your self. And please everyone ignore this ridiulous wanna be restaurant critic and go enjoy a great night of good food and great service. You will not regret it!

Dude, I trust the grassy knoll blue plate special critique. He tells it like it is. I have tried some of his recommendations and he is right on. The stage deli in New York is fantastic, exactly what he said.

Val, some people live in a Utopian society. Everything is perfect. All the time. Never a bad moment. Never a bland piece of cheese. Never a bad piece of fish.

And notice he throws stones saying that Antone’s is the same fried cheese as every other restaurant and for me to keep my negative comments to myself or else. His screen name says plenty about him.

Why are you deeply sorry to hear of the terrible piece of fish we had at Gia’s? And I think you mean the above “Comment” and not “post.” The above post concerns the comparison between ABC Lost and the Twilight Zone. And you are so wrong again when you state that cheese and breading is the same everywhere. Antone’s has the absolute best fried cheese and sauce. A perfect blend of cheese, light breading and zesty sauce. However, the Sandwich Factory fried cheese and sauce is barely passable, its very greasy, and the sauce is just so so. And Gia’s was simply bland.

About recommending a great doctor, please do, I think Gia’s ruined my taste buds.

I don’t think you do understand freedom of speech. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have told me to keep my comments to myself. That is the point of freedom of speech.

And just because you have tried just about everything on the menu, it doesn’t mean that I didn’t get a bad piece of fish. Or does Gia’s some how never make a mistake and over cook or under cook a meal? Are you stating as a fact that Gia’s not once ever served a soft drink that was flat do to low carbonation. Or a pizza that was not cooked perfectly. They make mistakes. Every restaurant does.

BTW, you stated “And one more thing,” and then you went on to state three more points. Perhaps you don’t understand that term as well.

And, if you don’t like my honest take on the restaurants I go to, then don’t come back. Lets see if you understand that concept.

Diculous, the grassy knoll is no more a food critic as they are pyschics. They interpreted Nostradamus wrong and they only get about half of their predictions right. I happen to appreciate the critiques here. They are not paid for the critiques, not affiliated with any corporation, just plain talking experiences with the places he eats at.

Correct, I am not a food critic. I am simply providing a service lending my opinion on the experiences I had at the many restaurants I have given patronage to. Most of the time, I recommend them. On rare occasions, I rate them unacceptable.

About being psychic, hey, so far, I am right on more than half of my predictions for 2010. I don’t think any psychic can claim these numbers.

Just wanted to say we have been to Gias many many times and have ALWAYS gotten a great meal. As a matter of fact I just had to look up their phone number to call for carryout and this site came up. The service there is Outstanding, prices are good, and food is always great! I am sorry you got some bad food, that does happen even at the best places.
