Lost Update - And Miles To Go Before I Sleep

Lost Update - Season V - 04/15/2009

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Last week I revealed two of the many experiments being conducted on the Lost Islanders. Ivan Pavlov and his salivating dogs to show how conditioning can be changed in an animal. Desmond pushing the button every 108 minutes was the subject. The second was Stanley Milgram’s study on Obedience To Authority. Ben Linus was right smack dab in the center of that experiment. Negative reinforcement to force obedience. The difference is that Desmond and Ben are not aware of any experiments, not aware that they are in a lab, and not aware that nothing they see, feel, or hear is real.

Tonight, I will enlighten you with yet another classic social psychology experiment being conducted on the castaways. I present to you Phillip Zimbardo's Stanford Prisoner's Experiment.

The Prison Experiment, conducted in 1971, was a critical social experiment to study how humans react and behave to being held captive. Zimbardo selected two groups of people deeming one group inmate guards, and the second group, prisoners. The guards were then told to lock up the prisoners and treat them as they would think prisoners should be treated. The prisoners were handcuffed and shackled together and led to their cells and locked in. In the beginning, attitudes didn't change, the guards were receptive to the requests of the prisoners for food, water, and bedding.

But as the experiment progressed, several of the guards became aggressive towards the inmates and went as far as torturing them. The experiment soon got out of control as the prisoners staged a rebellion and rioted against the guards causing both physical and mental harm to both the guards and prisoners. The warden, Phillip Zimbardo himself, had to end the experiment and bring order back to the two groups of of test subjects. The experiment was originally designed twofold. One, to study humans in captivity and how they adapt to being obedient and manipulated when presented a legitimate ideology and support staff. Two, how a group given absolute authority can overstep their boundaries.

My Lost theory sounds pretty good now doesn't it? The castaways of Oceanic Flight 815 are the prisoners while the "Others" play the part of the guards. At first, the "Others" stay away and leave the castaways alone and seem to live in a balanced environment. Until the prisoners find out what the "Others" are doing behind their backs. (Spying on them, stealing the children etc..)

The castaways assemble, and rebel against the "Others" in a violent showdown where many people are killed. The warden, (Ben Linus) has lost control of the situation, and must now put an end to the unchecked violence. This is exactly what transpired in Phillip Zimbardo's Stanford Prisoner's Experiment. Which brings us to my Lost theory.

Holy smoke monster Batman, we're just now getting around to what my Lost theory is. It's worth the wait.
Just what is the Grassy Knoll Institutes Lost theory…
Although it appears the survivors of Oceanic flight 815 are on a tropical island, they are being deceived. There is no island. The survivors are in a virtual reality laboratory. All the castaways are interconnected to one another sharing each others thoughts, memories, and feelings. While in this virtual reality laboratory, a battery of physical and mental experiments are performed on them. And who is running these experiments? As Juliet stated, the Aliens of course.

The poem opening this update is by Robert Frost titled, Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening. It describes the tumultuous relationship between Miles and his father, Doctor Chang. Read it again now, before we continue.

Horace brings Miles into the "Circle Of Trust." Not really much of a ceremony was it? Lafluer is not available and Horace needs somebody, Miles is there, and becomes part of the Inner Sanctum. (Now we all know why the compound community goes Helter Skelter.) Miles accepts, (Not even a secret handshake, secret password, not even a stinkin T-Shirt.) What Social Psychology study is going on here? (There will be a test on this tomorrow so speak up now)

I found something very odd in tonight's episode. While Miles and Hurley were riding in the VW van, the radio was playing It never Rains In California by Albert Hammond. Later on we heard the Captain and Tennille singing Love Will Keep Us Together. I am not here to judge the poor taste of music, but my question is, from what radio station is the music broadcast from? Yea, yea, yea, I know there is a tower on top of the mountain, but a radio station, highly unlikely.

Naomi tells Miles they need him for the island mission because there are a lot of dead people on the island they need information from. Hold the phone, stop the movie. Is Miles Bruce Willis, from the movie, I See Dead people? i don't buy it. Dead people on the island with information. Want my motto, dead men tell no tales.

If this were real life, and not a TV program, they would have a date with the mental ward. We, as rational people, would not accept that dead people were communicating with the living. (Jon Edwards has that racket cornered on the A&E channel)

The only plausible explanation is my theory. The virtual reality theory. No one is dead, or mostly dead. No one is in heaven. No one is time traveling back and forth and back again. The island isn't invisible nor does it move around in the ocean. Everything the castaways and the "Others" are experiencing is being controlled in a lab. A virtual reality lab. Each variable introduced is carefully inserted to create the desired effect to study how the herd, (Castaways) reacts.

Tidbits From tonight's Episode:

* Juliet to Kate: "Well, here we go!" After Ben's father finds he is missing.

*Miles is in the same time line as himself as a three month old child. You can throw that theory out folks.

* Naomi returns. And so does the hotness of the show. She is attempting to talk Miles into joining the freighter mission.

* Miles accepts for 1.6 million dollars.

* Do you know what lies in the shadow of the statue? If you don't you are not ready to go on the mission.

* Faraday returns to the island. Questions for Faraday: How many times has he been on the island. And since he has been there before, why doesn't anyone recognize him? Don't give me that Superman disguise crap.

Until next week, get Lost!

  1. Your sign out reminds me of John Safran vs God.

  2. I really hope Miles tell his father who he is. I think that would be an interesting twist. I am sure Dr. Chang knows there is a possibilty that time travel could exist. I want to know where the dead bodies go. I think they are putting them in the time machine before they experiment with live humans.

  3. Daniel knowing who Miles is makes things good too. Daniel is the constant for everyone.

  4. Now that we saw Miles living in the same time as his younger self, all those who said that it wasn't possible are wrong. Sawyer also experienced this when he saw Kate and Claire during one of the time shifts.
And miles to go before lost is over.

  5. I was thinking the same thing about the radio. where was it coming from. And I always try to listen to what is playing in the background to see if there is any significance going on. I hope for Hurley's sake that the Captain and Tenil song was just a fluke.

  6. Had no idea who John Safran was until I googled him.

  7. Here's a twist. Chang does know time travel exists, and he uses this knowledge to escape the Dharma camp before Ben kills everyone. He will then meet up with Miles in present time.

  8. And Daniel, like Richard, seems to know more than he's leading onto.

  9. Very valid point. You can throw that theory out the window leaving my virtual reality theory a little stronger.

  10. Well, if you really want to delve into the songs, that Captain and Tennille song was the return of Neil Sadaka. (He was a 50's and 60's pop singer) and he wrote this song for the Captain. At the very end of the song, Tennille sings, Sadaka is back.

Perhaps signaling that Faraday is back on the island.

  11. I want to know the secret of what lies in the shadow of the statue. And is the statue egyptian or roman or greek or other.

  12. Great poem. Significant when you look at it. Very clever Pat. it's like Miles is silently observing his father that he never knew with his father realizing who he is and that Miles has more raod to travel before he rests. That sums up Miles perfectly. Still don't think it's VR though. :)

  13. Ellis Island lies in the shadow of the "Statue of Liberty"

  14. I have followed your site for sometime now...but I have a question. If this is actually a virtual reality lab, can you explain the vastness of this lab...seems pretty large. Who is conducting the experiments and where and how are they being monitored?

  15. What does John Safran have to do with Lost? Confused!

  16. LOTGK states this in each and every update. Here is last nights version.

  17. Absolutely nothing!

  18. Listen up dudes, im only saying this once. Hurley is writing a star wars part 2 with some upgrades. How the hell does he plan to get the script to George Lucas? he's on the lost island. The reason is Hurley is the constant, the catalyst, the all knower and seer. Hurley is Jacob.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I don't think Hurley is Jacob. Hurley was afraid of the cabin when he and Locke went there. He may be the constant. But not Jacob. I am also wondering how the show is going to explain tha time travel paradoxes happening on Lost. One small change in the past, and the entire future is clouded. As in Sawyer becoming head of security at Dharma.

  20. OK...so all this is something in their heads...all of them can see the same island and the same events..hmm..some sophisticated lab...so in my mind I see them all lying in beds connected with sensors which sends them all the same "virtual thoughts". What a rude awakening we all will have when we find out none of this is real,""Just an experiment""...get real. Oh, btw, how does Juliet know its the aliens?

    ReplyDelete
  21. You are close. Yes, there is no island. Yes, they are all in a lab. Yes, they are all being experimented on. All see virtually the same events unfolding in front of them. However, some process the information they see differently from the rest. Hence Desmond sees what's ahead and Richard seems to be able to manipulate his own reality.

But I have to ask you, you scoff at my virtual reality theory scenario yet you embrace the constant time travel of the castaways to multiple times. You embrace time travel and exist in that same period as your past or future self depending on your perspective. And you embrace that dead people are walking around on the island handing out information to the living. And you embrace a smoke monster that drags people away screaming. And you embrace Richard, a man that doesn't age. And you embrace an island that miraculously heals the islanders. Locke is wheel chair bound, he wakes up on the island and he can walk. And you embrace that not only do the castaways time travel, but the island mass does as well. And simultaneously at different times.

But you scoff at an elaborate experiment where the castaways are secretly being studied to learn about human behavior.

And about the alien mention. Juliet mentions it to Sawyer as they are walking in the jungle when Sawyer asks why they are breaking up all the rocks. Juliet says, for the runway. Sawyer says, runway, for what? Juliet replies, the aliens. And then she smirks.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't think Hurley is Jacob either. About the time paradox, you are correct. Plenty of the past has already been changed. Just having Sawyer as head of security at Dharma is a major time paradox. At that moment, the future is rewritten. But if it is rewritten, then how did Sawyer go back into the past in the first place?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Perhaps it's the 10 great truths. Keep reading further replies.

  24. Exactly Max, exactly. I also like Robert Frost's writings.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Perhaps it's simian, as in the great lawgiver, from the Planet Of the Apes that lie in the shadow of the statue.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Perhaps he is planning on giving it to charlie, who's dead, and the next time he visits, have him give it to G. Lucas. :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't think they can change anything....thats what that whole argument between Hurley and Miles about a couple episodes ago. It is what it is. I kinda wonder if Miles is going to kill his father.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Here's the rub. Lets take Miles. Let's say he he kills baby Miles. if he does this, then how could baby Miles grow up and be recruited to go and talk to dead people on the Lost island? The classic time paradox.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well...obviously some crazy things would happen....but unless he was so depressed or whatever...why would he kill himself. But Lost can do anything.

    ReplyDelete
  30. That's not the point. The fact that it is possible at all is the time paradox. Just the mere fact that Miles has along with the entire time traveling bunch moved through time affects the time paradox. Sawyer is head of security!!! Time paradox. Kate helps Ben saving his life. Time paradox. Miles meets his dad. Time paradox. Juliet delivers a baby. Time paradox. All these things plus many others affect the time paradox. Each small change unravels the future. So if the castaways ever get back to 2004, that future will be drastically changed.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I read this every week and must say I highly enjoy it. I kinda buy into the theory about virtual reality. But Aliens?? Unfortunately I think if they reveal that it is aliens at the end, 90% of the viewers will be extremely disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The writers don't care how we feel once Lost is over. I do believe we will be disappointed with the way the show ends. It's going to be a "joke's on us" sort of ending.

    ReplyDelete
  33. What if the things that we've already seen happen on the island are already a direct result of what the castaways did in the 70's on the island?

That would excuse or at least explain the paradox wouldn't it?

They just wouldn't remember it happening because for them it hadn't happened yet.

All of this time management makes my head spin, I am going to go lie down.

...and Hurley makes me laugh. "I see dead people too dude." And the whole Empire thing... awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ben, if true, that the castaways were on the island in the 70's and what they did caused them to crash land there in 2004, wouldn't they be all older.

Example: Widmore and Ben are younger in the 70's, but older in the present time. Sawyer, Kate, Hurley and the gang do not age when they arrive in 2004. Are they all Richard type beings, who don't age? And what about Miles? he was a baby and an adult in the same time.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Agreed. No matter what the finale reveals, millions of viewers will not be satisfied.

    ReplyDelete
  36. when do we find out why sun ben and looke are in another time line?Miles being on the island w/himself ruled out my theory...unless that isnt the real miles?(mabey his mother left the island with someone else child) KATE did it!

    ReplyDelete
  37. That's why I don't believe it's time travel. To many variables, to many time paradox's. To many things that can go wrong. However, just to help out your own theory a little, in Back to The Future, Marty co-existed with himself from two different time lines. Don't know if that helped your theory, but hey, it's out there.

    ReplyDelete
  38. yea but how come miles can see a younger him and ben cant? that was my theory that the other 3 were already in that time line? but i dont know now

    ReplyDelete
  39. Is this week's lost a repeat?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Not a repeat, but also not a new episode. It is being billed as a view from a different perspective. As in Virtual Reality perspective. J/K, but maybe. :)
